There are two aspects to our outreach programs: bringing the concerns of Wisconsin farmers to the University and Extension communities and disseminating the results of PATS research to a wide range of audiences.

Sharing the Concerns of Farmers

PATS outreach programs provide a voice for Wisconsin farmers within the University and state government.

Since its inception, PATS has made it a priority to get a sense of farmers' views on issues. We have met with area farmers in listening sessions and other public forums. Our research toolbox includes in-person interviews and mail survey research to learn about the experiences, views, and concerns of Wisconsin farmers. PATS has earned a strong reputation for its willingness to convey the views and concerns of Wisconsin farm people to public policymakers.

Disseminating Research Results

Through our role in the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension system, we seek to disseminate the results of our research to a wide range of audiences. Our publication series - which includes research reports, research summaries, Wisconsin Family Farm Facts, staff paper series, special reports, and technical reports - highlights the results of our research projects. Participants in survey research receive "Reports to Respondents" to inform them of how this research is being utilized. Summaries of research are also communicated to the public through press releases and our web site.

PATS staff also present the results of our research at extension meetings and at university and public events. In addition, PATS has organized and participated in public discussions about contemporary changes in Wisconsin agriculture in order to inform public and private decision-makers about the effects of new farm technologies and policies.
