Wisconsin Agriculture in Historical Perspective: Economic and Social Changes, 1959-1995

By Douglas Jackson-Smith

This report pulls together data from a wide range of sources to document trends in the economic performance and social organization of agriculture in Wisconsin between 1959 and 1995. The first half of the report summarizes a number of aggregate macro-economic indicators, including farm numbers, farm output, productivity, prices, income, expenses, assets, and debts. The second part summarizes changes in farm structure (farm size, capital intensity, ownership structure, land tenure, and labor force characteristics) over the same period of time. The conclusion discusses the relationship between economic conditions and the pace and direction of structural change. The report is written to be accessible to a general audience, but provides a detailed set of tables and time-series data that are useful as a reference document.
