The Role of Women on Wisconsin Dairy Farms at the Turn of the 21st Century
Women's work has always been a mainstay of Wisconsin farm operations. And despite the rapid changes taking place in the dairy industry and in farm households, women's work remains integral to the operation of many Wisconsin dairy farms. This research looks at women's farm work, farm decision-making, household work, off-farm work, and quality of life issues during a time of significant change in the structure of dairy farm operations. This work is important because: (1) it increases the visibility of women's work in tasks central to their farm operations; (2) understanding women's roles in the present can give us the ability to predict what women's roles will be like in the future; (3) by knowing more about women's roles and concerns, we can develop and deliver services that include women; and (4) by improving resources available to dairy farm women, the work that they do on farms can be enhanced, thus improving overall farm management.
