With over 16,000 dairy farms and 1.2 million cows, Wisconsin continues to be a state whose landscape is dominated by family-run dairy farms. With each cow generating about 14 gallons (115 pounds) of waste per day, manure from Wisconsin dairy cows could fill a tank the size of a football field nearly four miles high every year. Because most Wisconsin farms are diversified crop-livestock operations, the majority of this manure is spread by farmers as an important source of fertilizer.
